The Code Book on CD-ROM By Simon Singh hosted at marrouche.net ********************************************************************************* This download consists of a README file and a choice of two main files: * codebook.zip - approximately 600 Mb (3 hours on household broadband) * codebook-lite.zip - approximately 40 Mb (15 mins on household broadband) The ZIP files contain "The Code Book on CD-ROM" by Simon Singh * Both versions are for Windows computers only * The "Lite" version has no video clips, reducing download size by 93% The instructions in the README file describe: a) how to install "The Code Book on CD-ROM" on your computer b) how to make your own CD-ROM copy using your CD-ROM writer Hard disc requirements: * codebook.zip - Temporary: 1.3 Gb (1300Mb) maximum, during set-up only Permanent: 690 Mb if you install to your hard drive or 0 Mb if you work from a CD-ROM * codebook-lite.zip - Temporary: 150 Mb maximum, during set-up only Permanent: 110 Mb if you install to your hard drive or 0 Mb if you work from a CD-ROM Notes: * The CD is still available for sale at www.simonsingh.net * It is now available free to download for personal and educational use * All copyrights in the material remain * Although free to download, it has not been released into the public domain * We believe that "The Code Book on CD-ROM" works as described. However we can accept no responsibility for unexpected behaviour or consequential loss. ********************************************************************************* If you do not succeed in using "The Code Book on CD-ROM" with these intructions, please visit http://www.simonsingh.net/Code_Book_Download.html for help. ********************************************************************************* After you have downloaded the ZIP file, you must do the following: 1) Extract "The Code Book" files into an empty folder on your hard drive: * You must create an empty folder into which you will extract the files * You should be able to start the process by double-clicking on the ZIP file * It could take up to 10 minutes for the full version * You should be left with 17 files and one folder inside the folder you chose 2) You may now delete the downloaded ZIP file. ********************************************************************************* You now have the following options: (Option B is recommended) A) Use "The Code Book" right away: * Double-click the file "codebook.bat" (or "codebook" with an icon of a gear) B) Create a CD-ROM copy of "The Code Book" * This will give you a CD-ROM like the on-sale edition (or a Lite version) * You can then install it on other computers, or re-install at a later date * You should use your usual CD-writing program to copy the 17 files and 1 folder onto a CD-ROM * The Lite version will fit on any CD-ROM * The Original version requires a 700Mb CD-ROM. (Most CD-ROMs today hold 700Mb) * If you are asked for a Label or Title for the CD-ROM, choose "The Code Book" * Your computer will produce a copy of "The Code Book on CD-ROM" for you * Finally, you can delete all the Code Book files from your hard drive C) Install "The Code Book" on your computer: * This will set up "The Code Book" as though you had installed it from the original CD-ROM * You will need 690Mb (Original) or 110Mb (Lite) free space on your hard drive * Double-click the file "setup.exe" (or "setup" with an icon of a computer) * Follow the on-screen instructions, until installation is complete * You may now delete the original folder into which you extracted the ZIP file ********************************************************************************* If you chose Option B, you will now have your own copy of "The Code Book on CD-ROM". You can use it to: i) Use "The Code Book" straight from the CD-ROM * Insert the CD-ROM. "The Code Book" should start automatically. * If it doesn't start, use Windows Explorer to open the CD-ROM, then double- click the file "open.exe". ii) Install a copy of The Code Book on a computer * Open the CD-ROM in Windows Explorer. * If the CD-ROM starts automatically, you may need to exit back to Windows and then right-click on the CD-ROM icon and choose "Open" * Double-click the file "setup.exe".
